Rescheduled – Kilmovee Heritage Day

52

As part of Heritage Week 2016 Kilmovee Community Centre has planned a FREE day of Family Fun looking back at life 100 years ago in the east Mayo village of Kilmovee.

From 1pm to 6pm on SATURDAY 10th SEPTEMBER 2016 Kilmovee’s community buildings will be transformed to portray life a century ago with a traditional schoolroom, Cailleach “hag” bed, storytelling corner, traditional music, crafts, food, drama, games and much more.

Tom Hennnigan of Hennigan’s Heritage Centre will give a talk on times gone by at 4pm. Traditional food will be cooked and served, traditional music will be played throughout the day and “ The Strawboys” will be entertaining everyone from 4.30pm.

There will be a mini-cinema showing films of life in rural Ireland a century ago. Prizes will be given in the best fancy dress competition in traditional clothing for under 15 year old’s.

This will be very much a ‘hands –on’ experience for all ages and visitors will be encouraged to listen, watch, touch and taste all of the experiences of the day.

If anyone has some 1916 memorabilia to loan to the Community Centre this would be very much appreciated.

These artifacts will be displayed in the Thatch cottage on the day alongside Mayo County Library’s Cumman na mBan Decade of Centenaries Exhibition and GMIT’s Heritage Studies Undergraduate Exhibition; 1916: Mayo‘s Story.
