Kilmovee Comhaltas held a special Seisiún na nÓg today, Sunday 28th May in Kilmovee Community Centre.
We were joined by three underage bands, who are competing at Fleadh Mhaigh Eo, Anthony Kananagh from the Claremorris Branch who was recently elected as the National Youth Officer of Comhaltas, our local musicians, including All Ireland Champions John & Joanne Devaney and the newly crowned Mayo Rose Sandra Ganley who represented our Branch at the selection night.
Fergal Smyth launched the 7th Seosamh Mac Gabhann Summer School.
The 7th Annual Seosamh Mac Gabhann Summer School takes place in Kilmovee, County Mayo from July 2nd to July 7th. This is a unique Summer School taking place in Kilmovee, a village which has been the source of some of the finest musicians down through the years.
One of these, the world famous accordion and flute player Dermot Grogan will be remembered on Sunday 2nd July with an interactive talk by local broadcaster and historian Joe Byrne in ‘Cois Tine’ Heritage Centre, Kilmovee. This will be followed by a session with many musicians who played with Dermot down through the years and everyone is welcome.
Registration for classes takes place on Monday, 3rd July with classes available in all instruments, traditional singing, sean nós dancing and Gaeilge.
Classes run in the Morning and Afternoon and designed so that you can take a class in your favourite instrument in the Morning and then a 2nd instrument, singing, dancing or Irish in the Afternoon.
We also have a unique class – ‘Le Chéile’, which is a workshop for 15 to 18 year old musicians at an improver to advanced level. This class focuses on arranging music, song and dance and learning how to perform professionally with tutors Cian and Caoimhe Kearins.
This year’s Official Opening takes place on Monday 3rd July at 8pm in the Kilmovee Community Centre with Gatehouse in Concert – a new traditional Irish band who primarily play music and song of Roscommon and North Connacht.
They feature John Wynne, John and Jacinta McEvoy and Rachel Garvey. Gatehouse will be followed by the monthly ‘Cois Tine’ Heritage Night when all local and visiting musicians, singers, dancers and story tellers are invited to join in.
