The shadow of the cross is never too far away from any of us. Seldom is it deserved and never is it welcome. The Lord didn’t embrace it either.
It was laid on his shoulders and he journeyed and, indeed, fell beneath its weight. Along the way, he received support – the forced support of Simon and the undoubted kindness of Veronica.
His mother’s presence too, gave strength when most needed. The cross was carried all the way to the Hill of Calvary and there it had its say.
On it, he died but through it, he gave hope to all who feel burdened and anxious. We cannot escape the cross but the hope is that we might see His presence there and that we too will receive the support and strength we need for the journey.
We are called to have faith in and through the Cross.
