It seems to be the case that they thought they could go back to their old way of life.
The way of life they lived before meeting Jesus. You can see why – it is something they knew about and felt secure in. It had provided some form of lifestyle for them and helped provide food for their tables.
Maybe they felt they knew no other way. The truth is, nonetheless, that having met Jesus it was not as simple as going back to their old ways as if they’d never walked with him, listened to him and chosen to follow him.
Once Jesus is truly encountered, there can be no going back to old ways – to “our” old ways.
